[ Starflyer 59 ]

Who: Starflyer 59, Dension Marrs, Pistis
Where: Wekiva Assembly of God - Longwood, FL
When: Sunday March 26, 2000
What I wore: dark blue jeans, my shirt with the globes and a grey backpack.

The Starflyer 59 show was being held at this church called Wekiva Assembly of God. It was in the middle of nowhere. There weren't even street lights leading down the street. I got lost! The show was being held in an upstairs room. There was a small platform in the center of the room along the wall for a stage. It had good lighting and a nice sounding PA.

Pistis was already playing as I arrived. The room was well packed. I've seen Pistis three times now and I pretty much recognize most of the songs. This was the best show I had seen so far. The first time they were a duo. The second time a trio - adding a backing vocalist/bells player. Tonight they added a drummer.

Next was Denison Marrs, another Orlando area band, who I've heard a lot about but I never caught any of their shows. I had an inclination from reading about them they would be something I would like. I was right. Denison Marrs is awesome. Maybe they can be my new favorite band. I don't know if I was more impressed more by their music or the way they were dressed. They were looking good, like rock stars. Cute too, with their shaggy hair. They were billed as an "acoustic" show. Only the singer/guitarist had an acoustic instrument. Maybe they meant to say they were going to be "less rocking". Their set was awesome. They take elements of space rock (flanger, delay effects pedals) and chord/riff progressions (ala Hum, Helmet). I liked the vocalist vocals - he had a nice style. It seemed they were singing about stars, space and planets. Very cool. I bought their CD on 6X6 Records and it rock outs and simmers on planet rings. They do get the Hum comparison. I am impressed.

In true Starflyer fashion, they came and left just as quick. I think brief sets should be expected at this point. I've seen them several times myself and I always wonder why they don't play for very long. They've got five full lengths and numerous EPs you'd think they'd have plently of songs to choose from to make a well rounded setlist. Also Starflyers live show is totally different than their albums. It's more raw and Jason puts so much more reverb on his guitar. I think that's what I like best about seeing them live. The "'50's" rock guitar sound is perfect for their style. It doesn't come through on their albums.

[ Starflyer 59 ]

They played about eight songs. The first three they did must be off the new album 'Everbody Makes Mistakes' because I didn't recognize them. I know they played "I Drive A Lot", "Duel Overhead Cam" and "Do You Ever Feel That Way". I think "Sundown" and "Harmony". Just don't quote me on those last two. If anyone remembers if I missed anything lemme know.
