Live Show: Secret Machines, The Helios Sequence.
Where: The Social - Orlando, FL.
When: Wednesday July 21, 2004.
Review and Photos by Jeffrey Howard.

In brief: The opening band was terrible. Thank god I don't remember their name. They were a joke band that wasn't funny or ironic. Though Adam thought they "weren't that annoying" he also offered they were what Yip-Yip would be if they were a rock band. Basically were several guys dressed in white costumes and long haired wigs doing hard rock/metal covers.

The Helios Sequence were incredibly loud. They were a drums-guitar two member band. I think they had toured with Modest Mouse before. The drummer was from Red Stars Theory and he was good. The song I knew from them made them sound like Modest Mouse but live they were really dreamypopish. Lots of guitar effects played along with a sequencer of loops and bass. It was good, but could be better. They could take it to the next level if they had actual members, like a bass player/keyboardist on tour with them. Now that would be cool to see.

I've heard a few Secret Machines songs. I thought enough of them to check them out. They were sorta Flaming Lips meets space rock. I had no idea they had such a following that they packed the floor area of The Social. Though their live shows leaves much to be desired. Like the new album the drums were out front and loud. So loud they almost completely drowned out the guitar player (I was standing right in front of his amp) and the bass/keyboardist? Forget it. I didn't even know if he had any amps turned on. Drum overload. And not even the drums were that great. It was all simplish jamp beats. There were some good moments, though.
