Poundsign
with Gritty Kitty and Masters of the Hemisphere
40 Watt Club - Athens, GA
September 30, 1997

The last day in September I went on a short road trip from Orlando, FL to Athens, GA with Michael Landmine9 to see Poundsign. Also Nick and Reda from Tallahassee also met up with us. The following is the email I wrote to my email list after I got back.

*Got a speeding ticket ten minutes outta Orlando....
*Saw a car accident before help arrived (a very unsettling feeling). A car
was overturned.
*Saw a baby deer by the side of the highway, in the middle part. Not alive. :(
*Listened to Mountain Goats "going to Georgia" crossing the state line. Cheesy, yes.

The show was at 40 Watt Club in swank downtown Athens. It is a really nice place. Couches everywhere, a big up-high stage. Nice. I rode up with Michael. We met up with two people from FSU (actually we passed them on the highway and they followed us), who are putting on the Florida Popfest in February. We were talking about "weird" band/show pairings cos we were thinking the upcoming Verbena and the Jesus Lizard was a funny matchup for a tour. I won the duel with Brainiac/Low. Who thought that show up? Was it really a good idea to let TimmyT and co to rile everyone up with electronic madness and let Low slow them down? It didn't happen that way.....

So anyway, so the main reason of me going was to see Poundsign, indiepop darlings from San Francisco. First band was Masters of the Hemisphere, from Athens. I had no idea that Athens had such a big indierock/pop scene. They were a bit Superchunkish and cute-looking (for boys). They jumped up and down at all the right places. I bought their 7" on Kindercore Records and have been loving it to death!

Poundsign was next. It was their very last tour stop for Poundsign before heading home. Their show was great.... an indiepop delight. I want the new CD to come out, um, NOW! It was worth all the hassle I had to endure to get to this.

Gritty Kitty played last. It was their record release party (yeah they are from Athens too). They put on a good happy show too. By the end of the show, it turned into an *all-star* jam. I forget all who all were on stage exactly.... Michael said Jeff Magnum from Neutral Milk Hotel got up on stage, as did one of the Olivia Tremor Control guys...

Michael nabbed us a place to stay with Dan Geller, one of the nice folks who plays guitar for Kincaid.

Athens is nice. If I had to live in the "south" I think I'd pick Athens.

We missed Superchunk by one day. :-(

It was all fun. Now, there's this thing Saturday in Gainseville that calls me.... Congratulations and American Analog Set are playing.....
