The Get Up KidsGet Up, Kid!

Photographs and story by Jeffrey Howard

I think my jaw hit the floor when I arrived late and the club was completely packed. My god, where did all these people come from? Since when do the Get Up Kids get to be..... popular? There wasn't anywhere near this many people at, say, the Pop Unknown show the week before. June of 44 even. There couldn't have been more than forty-fifty people to see them last year at Barbarella and even less the year before. I'm not sure how many people can fit into Sapphire but my guess there was about 200+ people in attendance.

I still only know three Get Up Kids. I'm not harping on the band or anything but they are pretty undistuigishable from all the other post emo bands to me. Maybe I haven't heard enough of their music? No one ever made me a tape of Get Up Kids songs. Why not? They get a lot of radio play on WPRK (91.5) and WTKS (104.1) so that's were I hear them. For this tour they added a keyboard/moog player. I must admit it really improved their overall sound. It was nice.

The crowd was into their show. At one point there was a dancing girl onstage shaking her booty. It made me *ahem* crack up. Boys and girls had their hands pumping in the air singing along with the lyrics the entire time.

I think Hankshaw opened but Hot Rod Circuit were already playing. I saw the last three songs. I thought they were good. I like the guitars. I couldn't help but think that I've seen them before.

Afterwards I was spotted by Geoff, from Gainseville, who said hi briefly. Everyone should say hi to me :)

Who: The Get Up Kids, Hot Rod Circuit. Where: Sapphire Supper Club - Orlando, FL. When: Sunday September 26, 1999. What I Wore: A shirt I got that week at a thrift store on a shopping spree with Vivian. Other than that I was naked - not even shoes.
