Basements of Florida, Telethon Veginald Cheeseburger and the Bluetooth Band.
@ Bar BQ Bar. Orlando, Florida. Tuesday September 29, 2009.
Review, video and pictures by Jeffrey Howard.

As always, the Tuesday night free shows at BBQ Bar are always fun and well attended. As far as I know it's the best thing going for downtown Orlando music wise (If you read through The Social or Back Booths calendar you know what I mean) on a regular basis. Finding out who's on the schedule for these shows is almost a mystery concert. You never see flyers, there's no listing, no posters. Maybe if you check Myspace bulletins the day of you'll get the latest, provided they are on your friends list. I found out about this show from Phil Longo (band leader behind Basements of Florida) just because he happened to walk by Kristin and I at the pizza place downtown the night we tried (unsuccessfully) to get into the Ettes show at the Social without paying $34 to get in. Thanks a lot Juliette Lewis- I wouldn't pay you a dime to see your crappy band. Do a spoken word tour and you'll get a maybe. And don't take along one of my favorite bands only to charge an arm and a leg to get in..... like Hot Hot Heat did with De Novo Dahl.

Sigh.

Anyway.

It's been a while since I've seen a Matt Kamm band I liked. His latest incarnation, under the name Tele V Cheeseburger, has been under development the past year or two as a solo project. Now he's one-upping himself by adding a full band, something I haven't seen since his Dodger days. His bands are better than the solo outings by far. With this Bluetooth Band he's back full force with a mix of 60's pop and 70's punk influences all under a heavy hippie hand. It's a little noisy and full of color. Kamm jumps around, losing his glasses in the process. I wonder how many pairs of glasses he goes through.

When you feel the ground rumble it just might not be impending thunderstorm but it may be a sign that somewhere in town is a Basements of Florida show. Basements of Florida started out a while ago as an instrumental trio under the direction of Phil Longo with Patrick O'Neal (History, My Hotel Year) on second bass guitar and Jeff Illgentfritz (Mumpsy) on drums. Now they've grown to three bassists and two drummers. Henry from Attached Hands joined on third bass guitar and Tyson from Summerbirds in the Cellar as second drummer. Tonight one drummer (Jeff) would call in sick so the band had to play with only one *gasp* drummer. Those guys kill it! It's a huge monster low end sound. Henry adds some effects to the sound with delay pedals and a POG that makes the bass sound like a church organ. They are, by default, the heaviest band in town.
