Doll Parts, The Smuts, Slippery Slopes, The Dead Popes. |
It always seems to me (I'm sure everyone thinks this) that out of town shows seem more fun. If a tour comes through Orlando and goes elsewhere like Tampa or Gainesville I'd rather skip Orlando and see that tour in another town. This show sounded like a good show to drive over to St. Petersburg. We had heard the three local, to the Tampa area, bands on myspace and they seemed worth checking out. I always like girl bands so Doll Parts was one I've wanted to see for a while now. Slippery Slopes, from Orlando, were playing too so it was a shoe-in we were going. As fate would have it Kristin and I ended up driving Slippery Slopes to St. Petersburg. The Emerald is in the downtown area of St Petersburg across from the State Theatre. It reminded me of what BBQ bar would be if it were more rockabilly instead of indie rock. We hung out in the parking lot drinking beer. I had to do all my drinking first thing since I would have to drive back. Fun! I was quite pleased with Doll Parts. They were just the right amount of old school Ramones-esque punk. They did a couple covers; Ramones, Angry Samoans. I think maybe more. The Smuts were all right. I definitely prefer the recordings a little more. Their songs were simple and straight to the point. And short- with some not even beating the thirty second mark. They also covered an Angry Samoans song. I wondered if those bands remember Kristin and I opened up for Angry Samoans a couple of years ago. Slippery Slopes had a pretty fun set as well. Their first record comes out really soon and they are going on tour in July. The Dead Popes were heavy on the rockabilly or psychobilly side of things. The singer sounded like Glenn Danzig. I'm not big on that style so I plead ignorance. They seemed all right. Everyone hung out for a while. We drove back to Orlando getting back just after 4am. I worked in the morning at 7am so man, I was out of my mind. But totally worth it. This was a fun trip.
