The
Kick Bright Zine.

FRIDAY AUGUST 28, 2008.

There may be a slow down here at Kick Bright. A thief broke into our upstairs apartment yesterday afternoon and stole our laptop. So all KB material is gone forever, not to mention our personal stuff.... I may have one more review because I had uploaded some photos the other night. Other than that all is gone. I live in a good neighborhood.... I have millionaire neighbors. I don't get it. I can't afford a replacement right now. Well, yeah. The best way to contact us is the phone us.

There was a little discussion about the Orlando Weekly on the recent This Little Underground column. There's some decent reading there.

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 27, 2008.

Show review: Hotpants Romance, Cars Can Be Blue, Marc with a C.
@ Taste. Orlando, FL. August 22, 2008.

I had been looking forward to this show the most this summer. Not only were Athens, Georgia pop band Cars Can Be Blue returning to Orlando but Hotpants Romance from Manchester, UK were making a small tour in the USA. [read more]

Nobunny. Photo by Kristin Messina.

Show review: Nobunny, Thomas Function, The Electric Bunnies, Jacuzzi Boys, Slippery Slopes, Shit Eagle, Garbo's Daughter, Woven Bones.
@ Wills Pub. Orlando, FL. August 23, 2008.

How long has it been since Wills Pub was closed down and bulldozed? I think it was at the end of summer 2006 and the Orlando music scene outside the downtown area has really taken a dive since. Will Walker, after many setbacks, is about to finally have a new location right on Mills Avenue. Wills on Mills is returning. This is such good news.......... MONDAY AUGUST 25, 2008.

7:19 am.

What another action packed weekend! Two in a row. I have a headache. Pictures and video really soon. I have one more day of work then I can catch up. Oh my gosh the Nobunny show at Wills was an amazing party. You can definitely say the new Wills is broken in....... here's a BEER DRENCHED photo:

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 20, 2008.

If you even mention the word "hurricane" people here in Central Florida go into a frenzy.I'm sure by 9pm last night there was not a single bottle of water or flashlight left on any retail shelf in town. Luckily Tuesday was my day off so I won't have to miss a day of work like everyone else. So what happened besides media overkill? Nothing. It was like any other afternoon thunderstorm that happens, you know, everyday in the summer. Although the television coverage was insane, at least there was something being reported on other than little Caylee and her family. I was expecting the local networks to cover how the Anthony family was preparing for the hurricane (oh wait, tropical storm, right?). I wanted to know if they went to Publix or Wal*Mart for supplies and what supplies they purchased. Where's the real reporting in this town I ask?

Anyway....... The Polkadots finally made Defame Orlando's blog. I was hoping for a little more depth but it's entertaining nonetheless. Perhaps the venonous comment section will juice things up. That blog is getting insanely popular. It mostly talks about dance nights and dj's that I don't know too much about. Hardly any bands get trashed. Though if I think about it that would be an oh-to-easy job. Where else on the internet can more Orlandoians come together and talk? Ever since the Orlando Weakly shut down their popular message board there hasn't been anyplace or anyone else to fill the void.... that I know of besides Defame.

Let's get to this weeks week wrapup. It's been a busy time for Kristin and I. We've been practicing, playing and promoting for shows heavily the past couple of weeks. Let's do first things first: Last weekend:

The weekend before last was local hero Dan Savage's birthday. Dan is always super fun and so was his party he put together at Uncle Lou's. Below are some photographs from the show. Some were taken with a digital camera but the batteries went dead and then I took out my cameraphone. Here they are:

Awesome and the Ass Kickers.

Shit Eagle.

Garbo's Daughter.

Slippery Slopes.

And And And And

Nobunny comes to Orlando!

So excited about the Nobunny show at the new Wills Pub this Saturday night. Yes, the new Wills Pub!!!! First show there!!!! You won't find about cool stuff like this show at the Orlando Weekly. There, you get to read a rave writeup of Danny Feedback. Who listens to Danny Feedback other than Danny Feedback? Is this the best the Orlando Weakly has to offer? Wills Pub is opening and they present you Danny Feedback over some of the best bands right now in Florida: Jacuzzi Boys, The Electric Bunnies (a rare performance) from Miami, Garbo's Daughter (the only Orlando all-girl band worth notice), Thomas Function (from Alabama), Shit Eagle and Slippery Slopes. Nobunny is being flown in by Florida's Dying Records from Washington state for this only Florida appearance. WOW. It's good to know there's Kick Bright around to tell you about what really happens in this town. Read more about it on the Orlando Events page (also read about Friday's Hotpants Romance show - also not in the Weakly).

THURSDAY AUGUST 14, 2008.

Don't go to Stardust Friday as I encouraged all of you to go. They canceled the show I booked with them yesterday morning. My apologize in advance if you go and A Faulty Chromosome isn't there, replaced by...... Orlando's own Amy Steinberg (or wherever she is calling home nowadays).

I was looking forward to bringing a good show to town. I focused the past several weeks on this show, even more than my own bands show (which is playing Saturday at a venue that doesn't double book or cancel shows). I don't have time to go back around town to take down posters and remaining flyers. I wasn't able to relocate the show, either. Believe me, I tried all day yesterday.

Thanks to Sam Metro for helping me and Blush Response, who were also to perform. I was looking forward to seeing them again.

Way to go Orlando!!!!!!

MONDAY AUGUST 11, 2008.

Come to these shows (A Faulty Chromosome @ Stardust & TV Club @ Orlando Brewing) this upcoming week. I am asking nicely..... I'm getting back into booking shows that aren't one of my own bands.... There are lots of good bands I'd like to bring to Orlando. Come out, have fun. Both of these are free shows. Please support.

MONDAY JULY 21, 2008.

I just posted three Hot Hands to our Myspace. All are from our July 4th performace at I-4 Fest at Austin's Coffee (not pictured above). "Never Been Kissed", our super-fun The Kiss Offs cover. Also "Tall Guy To The Front", our newest (and longest) song. And "Bitch Control", which was a Jeanie and the Tits song Kristin wrote and sings lead vocals. The songs are pretty messy. We had a more than a few drinks out in the parking lot beforehand and the vocals are a little low in the mix.

I know you were going to ask, that's Brian Bell helping us out, the top thingee on Kristins cymbal broke off so it would go flying off everytime she hit it. Thanks again Brian.....

SUNDAY JULY 20, 2008.

The Best of Orlando in the Orlando Weekly makes me want to shoot my face off. That publication needs a serious burning to the ground. What little shred of credibility I had for that magazine is now gone completely. It's not just the writers, the readers too, are to blame.

Don't get me started.

I did enjoy the Phil Longo article earlier this month. It was a saving grace but there was NO MENTION AT ALL of Florida Arson Project, GRAY BEFORE MY EYES, or The Moves That Matter. The first two being crucial and important Central Florida bands. To not mention them is inexcusable. But they did mention bands he wasn't in. Go figure? Part One: The Ballad of Phil Longo. Part II: A Working Man.

TUESDAY JULY 15, 2008.

I've been looking up videos of old shows I have been to and I found a really good one of The Promise Ring and Jimmy Eat World at the infamous Brodie's Warehouse from 1998. Yeah, ten years ago. I still remember it like it was last night.

Visit Greggs youtube page and watch pretty much the entire set (and wish you were there).

Going back even further I saw some videos from Adventures In Immortality. Some of these date back to 1990! You want to know what cool stuff was happening in Orlando back then? Check out the videos. The ending of the show at the Edge opening for Fugazi is insane! A younger Phil Longo is playing bass in the later videos.

THURSDAY JULY 10, 2008.

In case you missed it read Adams raging review about Strangers. Leave comments. No, I'm not adding fuel to the fire. What's your opinion?

TUESDAY JULY 1, 2008.

Show review: Doll Parts, The Smuts, Slippery Slopes, The Dead Popes. St Petersburg, Florida. Saturday June 28, 2008.

It always seems to me (I'm sure everyone thinks this) that out of town shows seem more fun. If a tour comes through Orlando and goes elsewhere like Tampa or Gainesville I'd rather skip Orlando and see that tour in another town. This show sounded like a good show to drive over to St. Petersburg. We had heard the three local, to the Tampa area, bands on myspace and they seemed worth checking out. [more]

Also more show reviews from June 2008:
- Hot Hands, Ben and Bruno, Small Sur, Woven Bones.
- Zechs Marquise, Strangers.
- Teenage Cool Kids, Slippery Slopes, Jim O'Rourke.
- The Feeling of Love, Shit Eagle.

SATURDAY JUNE 28, 2008.

Show review: Monotonix, Slippery Slopes, Tooth and the Enamels. @ Back Booth. Orlando, Florida. Tuesday June 23, 2008.

There are shows. And there are parties. This show was the latter. It was the kind of night to put all lame shows to bed, where they belong. Yes, there are videos. [more]

FRIDAY JUNE 27, 2008.

Show review: Neil Hamburger, Das But, Billy Clark. Thursday June 26, 2008.

THURSDAY JUNE 26, 2008.

Show pictures: The Pets, Slippery Slopes @ Crooked Bayou. Tuesday June 3, 2008.

We added about 15 items to the Kick Bright Store.

THURSDAY JUNE 19, 2008.

Yeah, so finally we present some record reviews. Lots more coming. We'll be posting them five at a time. Enjoy! Go buy records.

TUESDAY JUNE 17, 2008.

Show review: Woven Bones @ Austin Coffee and Film. Thursday June 12, 2008.

MONDAY JUNE 16, 2008.

Show review: Mudhoney, Birds of Avalon, The Ludes @ Back Booth. Orlando, Florida. Saturday June 14, 2008.

First things first. Yes, there was a lot of flannel in the room. I'll spare my commentary on flannel in the summertime. Yes, there was at least one person with a Nirvana/Kurt Cobain t-shirt. [more]

WEDNESDAY JUNE 11, 2008.

Show Review: Teenage Cool Club, Werewolves of Thunder, Hot Hands. At the Conway House. Wednesday June 4, 2008.

There's been a thriving house show scene in Orlando as of late. It's an extremely healthy sign of the music community here. At some shows I've been to are more well attended versus club shows. In Colonialtown there's at least two houses within blocks of each other: the Lo-Fi House and the Punk House. Then there's The Conway House, located in the Conway neighborhood. The Conway house has been pretty active. I'd always see flyers around the internet, from hardcore to indie rock, genre didn't seem to matter... [more]

TUESDAY JUNE 10, 2008.

Florida summer.......it's hot, now it's raining. Kristin is taking a nap. We've gone out every night since last Tuesday night and saw several hundred bands. Boy, we tired. Pictures tomorrow?

We are playing the Social in July. Maybe you'll come? Details soon.

MONDAY JUNE 2, 2008.

Ebay auction: Pefftronics Super Rand-o-matic SB-101. Ends in five days. Guitar geeks check should take note. It doesn't come up for auction very much. I've had one for years now and I attest to its awesomeness.

SUNDAY JUNE 1, 2008.

Reason #141 to Hate Your Roommates.

So I was reading some on X-Entertainment zine and I came across this fun article about discontinued sodas. It made me laugh.

It also pissed me off royally because I had a lot of these cans until recently..... I'm a collector, you know? I have shelves, boxes, storage spaces of stuff. Anyway, since the late 80's I started collecting aluminum cans of sodas. Over the years I had amassed quite a collection - an impressive collection at that. I had cans from all over the country from the majors (Coke, Pepsi) to smaller localized "indie" (if you will) brands. I had the "sex" Pepsi cans to the very first edition of Cherry Coke (and every single one since). Even though I had moved from place to place I kept these cans at my parents home in my old room displayed over a space over the closet. Mom would always bother me about taking them all the time. I figure just leave them there until I had a good way to display them.

I think it was 2004 when I moved into the Portland Avenue house (right behind Peacock Room). I had three roommates, Lindsay (of course), her boyfriend Adam and one of Lindsays old friends Matt (aka Phelix)..... or was it the other way around? Hmmmmm. During my stay at that house my mother had finally wanted my can collection to go (you know, spruce up the "sewing room". So, I went over and filled one-maybe two boxes of the whole collection. I transported them over to Portland no problem.

A day or two later I was looking around the house to get some of the cans out to display on one of my shelves. I could not find the boxes anywhere - not in the kitchen, closet, patio. Nowhere. All right, are you ready for this: ONE OF MY ROOMMATES PUT THE BOX OUT WITH THE RECYCLE!!!!!!!!

You cannot imagine the rage I feel as I type that last sentence out. My caps lock key isn't big enough if you ask me. No one admitted to being the biggest fraking (yes, I said fraking) idiot on the planet for trashing such a prize collection. It was irreplaceable. There's no possible way I could even get a third of what I once had back. How can such a thing be replaced? You can't.

The only can that remained out was a can of Crystal Pepsi. It was kept separate because there was still Crystal Pepsi in the can. Yes, that's right - drinkable Crystal Pepsi aging like fine wine. I kept this solo can on display in our kitchen. It was full when I moved in. When I moved out the can was empty. Take my advice people, never live with roommates.

MONDAY MAY 26, 2008.

Event Review: The Shotgun Heard Around the World Party: Hot Hands, Slippery Slopes, Shit Eagle. Saturday May 24, 2008.
This year Rich from Florida's Dying organized a party called 'Shotgun Heard Around the World' being held all over the country including Orlando, New York, Cleveland, Columbus, Seattle, Oakland and maybe even more. All the exact same moment, in this case 11pm EST, everyone shotguns a beer. And everything and everybody was connected via satellite.... aka cell phones. [more]

FRIDAY MAY 23, 2008.

Hot Hands is having a show this Saturday at our practice space we share with Slippery Slopes, who are also playing. Shit Eagle is playing AND YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS SHIT EAGLE. They are awesome. It's free and there's going to be lots of beer because this is going to be the Orlando chapter of the Shotgun Heard Around the World Party taking place all over the country. Around 11pm there's going to be a massive beer shotgun. If you need direction please email.

Event Review: Grandma Party Bazaar. Sunday May 18.

WEDNESDAY MAY 14, 2008.

Pop Mayhem in Gainesville last week was awesome. I'll have pictures and maybe some audio from all the bands. I have a lot of material to go through. Videos are turning up on Youtube. Here's one from Courtneys from the final night:

THURSDAY MAY 1, 2008.

We're not sure if he got arrested this time or if they took him to the hospital. What would you do if you holed yourself in a small apartment all by yourself for a month and a half? Where the only time you left the house was to score more alcohol?

He's been drunk for a month and a half, since March 13th. This guy. He lives below us. He blasts his stereo so loud our furniture shakes. Everyday. All hours. 7am, 3pm, 9pm, 11pm. Once he left the house with the stereo blaring and did not return until the next day. We did not get any sleep. The music started out with classic rock, then changed one week to oldies, Then went just to only Elvis. He would be so trashed he couldn't even open his front door when I knocked to tell him he left his lights on on his truck. There's no way he was driving sober.

This morning there were bangs, his porch door slamming against the house. He was screaming "help me!" "help me!". He fell to the ground. Neighbors walking their children called the police. The construction workers next door called the police. Three police and one fire truck came. He hasn't returned. It's like we're living with The Shining.

THURSDAY APRIL 24, 2008.

Show Review: Jeanie and the Tits, Slippery Slopes, Hot Hands.
@ The Peacock Room
. Thursday April 3, 2008.

If you never had the chance to see Orlando band Jeanie and the Tits perform it's official, you never will. Forming a little more than two years ago as a one-off tribute band of an early Florida punk band Teddy and the Fratgirls for The Brian Costello Show, the band announced their final show in early 2008 after numerous shows in Florida, a summer tour and a 7" on the Florida's Dying record label. With second drummer Jacob moving to India in a few months, Jeanie felt it was time to end the band while on top. And, boy, did they go full-out on top. [MORE]

SUNDAY APRIL 6, 2008.

Hot Hands was added to the Jeanie & the Tits breakup show. Here's a video of us doing our song "Dynamite" shot by Dan McGuire.

Friday March 21, 2008.

We've been ultra busy as of recent times. In addition of going to tons of shows we've made thrift adventures down south Florida. You know, down in the Margate, Coral Springs area. We're getting together a little website right here on Kick Bright to sell cool stuff we find, vintage clothes, toys, etc.

We are in the middle of recording the first Hot Hands record with Nick Gardiakos. We've got all the drums and guitar tracks down for seven songs. We just need to record keyboards and vocals. So far it sounds really tough. We're playing a show at the end of April that is going to be awesome.

Courtneys are taking a break from frequent shows to work on new songs. We want to record a full length in a few months. We're playing Pop Mayhem in May in Gainesville. That is going to be so awesome. Check out the poster on the right.

Kristin is also making some monster pillows and I am working on a 500 piece puzzle of a double cheeseburger.

JANUARY 24, 2008.

After quite some time I have finally acquired the hardware and software where I will be able to update this zine the way I want. There's not going to be a big super-spectacular debut. No time for that. New material will be released at a relaxed pace.

I'm planning on being more "local-centric" this time out as a general focus. This may bore people not in the central Florida area but this is how it will be. I'm also going to be a heck of a lot more critical. A lot of things have been ticking me off, whereas in the past I primarily focused on being positive. Not anymore. Now you will be getting both. Honesty is going to get me into trouble.

Also, for the first time ever I will have another regular contributor, my fiancee Kristin Messina. You are probably like her writing more than mine. In fact, the first show review will be her doing.

We're going to have show reports from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Slippery Slopes, Nicky Click, Tres Bien plus more in the days to come. Record reviews, too!!!!

First off is a review from Kristin when we went to see Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

Show Review: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Emily Stine Band.
