Kristin and I are playing in Sarasota this Saturday. There's a nice preview write-up on Finch House zine and Creative Loafing. We also have new t-shirts. It's a design we came up with and Kristin drew. You can see some samples here:

If you have ever been to Uncle Lou's you will find this video completely amazing.

I'm trying to figure out what to do with Kick Bright this year. I always switch things up to keep my interest level up. I did a lot of show reviews last year. Frankly, I'm tired of doing them. I'll do them from time to time because I can't help myself but not as often for now.
Most likely I'll be starting a new blog just for Hot Hands related info and stories in the next few weeks. Kristin and I had to move out of our practice space and we've set up our guitars and drums our living room. We have a tiny upstairs apartment and our downstairs neighbor doesn't mind the racket we make. It's actually been a good move- we've been practicing more often now.
There's going to be an Orlando shows webpage so I won't have to keep up my calendar. It's been a very time consuming project and I'd rather not have to spend so much attention to it.
One big project I want to do is add videos I've filmed from shows from the late 90's like Superchunk, Grifters, Geoff Farina, Mineral.... I don't even remember what all I have. I don't have a way yet to convert those 8mm tapes to the computer. If anyone out there can assist me I'd appreciate it. I spent two days last week organizing all my film photographs and negatives from the past five years. This made me want to rescan photos from past reviews. Bandwidth is so not an issue like it was in 1999, you know? Make them bigger I say!

The Shreds are getting back home from their month long east coast tour tonight. The last show is at Uncle Lou's with St Dad, Permanent Nap, Slippery Slopes and Lagues. Maybe more? Who knows? It's Uncle Lou's. Show up at 9pm.
The Total Bummer Festival is happening in Gainesville March 26-28 featuring about 80 or so bands from all over the country put on by the Oh Fortuna guys.
Wednesday February 24, 2010.
Here's a link to the Kangnave blog that uploaded a friends of theirs homemade boxset featuring all female fronted punk bands from the late 70's to the late 80's from all over the world. It's an insane amount to download - about twelve discs worth of material. Take a listen. It may take months to go through.
I've been to a bunch of shows but I don't have any spare time to go into depth. Here's two videos from last week:
Turbo Fruits @ Back Booth in Orlando.
Surfer Blood @ Cafe DaVinci in Deland.

Kristin and I got back from our Hot Hands in South Florida weekend tour. We had a fun time, met a lot of people, made some awesome (and practical) thrift store finds and all that... though I wish we could play a place like this:
Or play with a screamo band with a singer (and lamb) that looked like this:
In more reality it went down something like this:
Filmed by Dan Mcguire who deemed it our best set ever.

The Garbo's Daughter cassette finally came out on Burger Records last week. You can order it from the Burger Webpage or pick it up locally from Kristin or Mandy. It differs from the self release with the addition of a song (a total of four). 250 were pressed. Get yours before they sell out. No release show as they are no longer a band.

Chris Raes Birthday show at the Social with Mumpsy, Look Mexico, The Shreds, Slaves, Architects of Fear, Yip Yip, 1991.
This show was Mumpys member Chris Rae's annual birthday show which entails Chris Rae organizing the whole show, getting drunk and then passing out on stage. This year would be no different. Haha. This year there would be clowns running around. There's nothing more scary than clowns on your birthday.
On arrival Slaves was already playing on the second stage, which is in the back room of The Social. These guys get better with each show. They are lucky to have one of the areas most exciting drummers in Vivek. Vivek tears through skins like beavers through wood. Back on the main stage was Titusville band Architects of Fear, who sported gawdy tuxedos and suits while playing autoharps and keytars. They were an odd bunch for sure. They venture into musical territory I am not an expert in - prog rock - yet they had a sense of pure giddiness to give it life. READ MORE HERE.

The new year started out with a bang and I've been trying to catch up since. Kristin and I spent New Years Eve in Tallahassee, our state capitol. Our band Hot Hands played a show at St Michaels Pub with three of our most favorite bands that we met last year: Gemini Cricket, Boss Fight and Waylon Thornton and the Heavy Hands. It was a blast. I'll have pictures and video from that soon. Right now I've still got some December happenings to share.
A lot of bands come to Stardust and all hell brakes loose: Slavescene, MLU, Nazi Dust, Horrid Cross, Lesson Lesson Lessen Relearn, Honed Bastion.
This was another cool show at Stardust that scene veteran Josh Erickson this year. He also organized that Diet Cokeheads show last October I wrote about. He's bringing harsh sounds to an otherwise mellow venue and this is a good thing. Not to mention serving a little mayhem on the side. READ THE REVIEW HERE.
Select posts from 2009:
Well, I ended up not having a Christmas tree this year. I made this display instead, a mix of my Christmas ornaments and some other stuff sitting around. There's a couple of cylons running loose in there somewhere. Open the image in a new window to see it a little bigger.
A video of Jeanie and the Tits from January 2007 quietly popped up last week on Youtube. As of yesterday there were only four views, three of which were me. It was taken with a camera where the sound disappears when they zoom in and out. See it here.
Weak Ends in the Weird World of Uncle Lou's.
Two shows: Night of Pop 6 with Go Ghosts, Nervous Systems, Weak Ends and down the block with New Roman Times.
For the past couple of years Orlando musician, supporter, micro-label guy Sam Metro was put together several shows featuring the better true "indiepop" acts in Florida. If you haven't heard his Florida's About To Pop compilation you are missing out. Copies run scarce but it has a lot of essential pop bands from Florida (For Ex-Lovers Only, Hi I'm Anna, Saving Twilight, etc). This show he put together, called Night of Pop 6, featured two Gainesville and two Orlando bands that all played the Gainesville Pop Mayhem Festival this past summer.......... the New Roman Times were visiting from Austin, Texas. They moved from Orlando to Texas a while ago........ READ THE REVIEW, PHOTOS AND VIDEO.
Audacity brought a hurricane from California in the shape of a burger. Show with Crystal Antlers.
California band Audacity made their way to Florida to basically blow away the small handful of people in the room. The guys have a young exuberance packed into a ball of energy that exploded exponentially onstage. They rock. To get an idea where they are coming from the first song they played was "Annette's Got The Hits", a Red Cross standard. A lot of people cover that song (Rocket, Golden Triangle) and their rocking version is a good one. The next few songs were from their first CD and brand new tour tape both released on Burger Records. Bits come off like early Replacements with a current sound like Smith Westerns. They've got a good thing going on. You can tell those guys are having wide-eyed stupid fun. Oh to be nineteen and on a nation wide tour. Best show I've seen since Davila 666 this past summer.
Crystal Antlers, also from California, also played. They are good at what they do which is code for I really didn't like it but they play their instruments well. It reminded me of Trail of Dead, sonic indie rock that doesn't quite have the hooks to capture that all important memorable factor. If it weren't for percussionist Chocolate's flamboyant showmanship I may not have made it to the end of their set. That guy was awesome. But the music.... eh......
Surfer Blood, Great Deceivers, An Introduction To Sunshine, Bananafish at Back Booth.
Day three (and fourth show I saw) of the weekend was a definite highlight with the return of Surfer Blood to Orlando. They've been all over internet blogs all the way up to Entertainment Weekly. The band has currently been at another tour this year, this one an insane 43 date tour from Florida to California and everywhere in between playing with Art Brut, Japandoids, Jay Reatard among others. They've also added a new band member- a percussionist/keyboardist. It works for them. I wasn't sure how it would change things but I think it adds a fresh dynamic. READ MORE HERE, PICTURES and THREE VIDEOS.
Kristin has an Etsy account set up. We're going to be putting up her artwork, handmade clothes and vintage clothing for sale. Visit it today.
Vivian Girls at Lake Worth, Florida.
It was awesome news hearing Brooklyn band The Vivian Girls were finally going to make it to Florida. They weren't coming to Orlando so I had to choose between Tampa and Lake Worth. What sold the city was the opening bands. Since Pretty Please is a band I had been wanting to see really badly for the longest time it was an easy choice - even if Lake Worth is a three hour drive (as opposed to less than an hour to Tampa). In fact, I never even bothered to check who opened in Tampa. I was sold. SEE A TON OF PHOTOGRAPHS and THREE VIDEOS HERE.
Things I am working on for 2010: The Hot Six complete discography.
The Hot Six was a band I was in with John Duvoisin and Phil Longo from about 2001-2004. We only officially released a five song EP on Breaker Breaker Records but we recorded an unreleased thirteen song full length that was more representative of our raw live sound. This year I remixed and transferred a handful of 4-track demos and outtakes to my computer, some of which I didn't even remember recording. We've talked about this amongst ourselves for years but we hope to have some kind of release out in 2010 from this band I am totally proud of.
"Kiss Without The Makeup"
Probably our most popular song that we recorded for our first EP. The production for this scorcher is a bit super slick. The first ten seconds of this song are known to make babies come early.
"The Art Of A Miss"
Phil calls me "Lil Riffer" for writing this catchy and super smartassed tune for our full length recording. What? Me a smart ass? Whatev! Kristin and I started covering this song in Hot Hands so if you have seen us recently you'll recognize this song.
"Ex-Uncle Joe"
It's hard for me to pick my favorite Phil song. This one's in the running. This was one of our poppiest songs. This is the 4-track demo version.
Pictures from tour - the big Orange Man somewhere on A1A.
I don't remember exactly where this big orange man is. It's on A1A between Jacksonville and Daytona Beach. It's right along the roadside nearby a run down retail looking building. It looked like it had been abandoned for some time. I've also looked for older pictures to see what it looked like when it was in use. No luck so far. It looks like he had arms that were connected to the back of the sculpture. He looks so friendly. I wish I could shake his hand. MORE PICTURES.
Orlando Links.
I am always on the search for similar "underground" zines/blogs to Kick Bright in the Central Florida area. Either they don't exist or they are just too hidden that I don't know about them. I have a couple of noteworthy links to share.
Kyle Raker writes a blog called Heart of Palm where he interviews his friends about their art, music and projects. This is great because NO ONE DOES INTERVIEWS. The most recent interview is with Richard Minion, the man behind Horsebites design and member of New Mexican Disaster Squad, Gatorface and No Friends. Other interviews are with Chris Cucci from Post Records and Dan Rozemblum from Thunderdome Booking. These are excellent reads.
Another one is Super Cosmic Bros which covers the more experiental/noise/diy side of the music spectrum through show and record reviews. I don't know who writes it as there is no information about the author other than the name Pizzagoblin. I have to admit I think a lot of these "bands" are pretty terrible/talentless in more ways than one. They know not what they do. But I've been reading this blog for the past month and I can see a little more depth into this small devoted microscene. The authors observations seem pretty sound but I have yet to cross the fence. It would be great if there were interviews with these kinds of bands/art projects/anti-musicians. One of the most important things in noise music is purpose and intent. This explaination is needed and an outlet for this does not exist.
Kristin's Tomato Soup Dress.
Here's a picture of the dress Kristin made for the Warhol-Manson party at Wills Pub last night. It started out as a shirt and a pair of "mom" pants she got at the thrift store. She cut, hacked and sew them together turning them into a dress. Then she handpainted the Campbells soup can label on. Her makeup is supposed to be similar to one of Andy's prints of Elizabeth Taylor.
I remember this, waking up with a rock in my back.
I recently developed 5-6 rolls of old film I had laying around the house from various cameras. Some of them I had no idea what was on them. The one above was taken with a split cam during the Courtneys/Doris Delay tour in the summer of 2006. It was the morning after all of us sleeping overnight at the beach somewhere between Miami and Melbourne. I'll be sharing more in the next few days. Some older pictures taken with my split cam are here. Or some more lomo galleries here.
Here's a video from Saving Twilight this past weekend. There was crowd surfing at Uncle Lou's during our set. It was quite a sight.
Probably not to many people would know what the JeffreyList was. It was one of those list-serv email list things that was part of early Kick Bright. It was the only "community" oriented forum I ever allowed. Readers of Kick Bright from all over the world talked about everything you could think of. Former listee Tracie, from Chicago, wrote a nice little article about it.
I finally found a video from that infamous Nobunny show. It's totally noisy, messy and extremely blurry. This was the last song we played, "Chuck Berry Holiday".

What is Kick Bright Zine?
Kick Bright is on online
fanzine based in Orlando, Florida created and authored by Jeffrey Howard. It covers a wide range of topics ranging from music, photography, movies, commentary and lots more. This is one of the first online zines ever on the internet. True. All contents are by Jeffrey, including all photographs, unless where noted.
Kristin Messina is also a contributor. Jeffrey and Kristin are engaged and are to be married, believe it or not. You can view our Myspace profiles here: Jeffrey Howard [Facebook], Kristin Messina. You can write us email: kickbright@hotmail.com.
We have five episodes so far. The latest has fifteen songs from such acts as Florida Arson Project, Neon Blud, Spanish Dogs, The Postmarks and more accompanied with our insight and (hopefully) entertaining commentary by the two of us.
There's several ways to listen to the podcast. If you are subscribed via iTunes the podcast will show up there. The iTunes version is divided into chapters with pictures and links for listed bands. Pretty neat. If not subscribed you can listen to it from the Podomatic page. They have some different options there to best suit your needs.
We'd like feedback on this project. You can use our regular email or you can call our voice mailbox at: 206-984-0956.
